want.jpgDuring WWII in the spring of 1940, President Roosevelt expanded the army to 227,000 soldiers. Members of Congress introduces the Selective Service and Training Act to pass the first peacetime draft in the history of America. The men were enlisted the month after the attck on Pearl Habor. It was hard living for the new soldiers, mostly since they weren't very sure of what they were doing. Over 60,000 men who faced living in tents, equitment shortages, diseases and illnesses. They went through many exam processes and were given injections against smallpox and typhoid, there they were labled "G.I.," which stood for Government Issue. Then were sent off to basic training for 8 weeks. In the rigorous training they learned to handle weapons, load backpacks , read maps, pitch tents and dig trantches, but mostly they learned to work as a team.
